to the forty million turkeys that after a cruel and torturous death, are now residing in our refrigerators, awaiting their turn on the next leftover sandwich. r.i.p.

so i missed bloody sunday last week. due to news things. and not feeling up to it. you know.

now. im in love with my local theater. not only am i going to see bowling for columbine tomorrow night. at last. but later this week. frida is playing. and in a few weeks. far from heaven.

all of which ive been dying to see. all of which i thought id have to drive two hours to a bigger town to see them. and now. theyre playing in my town.

just little bits of brightness there.

im going to see bloody sunday tomorrow night. and i am so excited. ive been so intrigued by this story/event since i was at the icp in march and saw a documentary exhibit on it. and then. there was this movie. which opened on my birthday, you know. but now. now its playing in my neck of the woods. with a discussion afterwards even. my town rocks my socks.

:: caroline 11:49:00 PM [+] ::
i was rushed to get into work by ten today. no reason really. just wanted to be there by ten.

got there just in time for the budget meeting though. which was a pleasant surprise. since im not usually in on such things. you know. being the weekender and all.

but i was so rushed that i skipped breakfast. this is something i never do. and ive been virtually worthless all day.

except that i did get the paper to acknowledge hanukkah this year. so my editor thought i was just so stinkin brilliant that hes doing a whole special religion section over the next fiveish weeks.

and even though my day was spent shooting college basketball practice, men hanging christmas lights on their front porch, ice encapsulated tree branches and a sneak peek at the winter season at the museum.

mostly zzz really.

i am pretty psyched about the 'we're not going to pretend christmas is the only holiday this year' thing though.

ps: i was happy with the shots i took at the museum preview slideshow thing. one is different. one is blah boring typical. my paper does lean more toward the blah boring typical side really. but. i put both in and we shall see which one runs.

my quote for today is an ode to the two day snowstorm that was more like an ice storm that happened to drop a few inches of snow on us this weekend. and because i was listening to this cd in the darkroom tonight and this song just hit me. like it always does.

'the first november snow will leave you stranded / til the days turn into months, then into years' - from my favorite mark erelli song, 'river road'

quote of today:

'time to grow wings and fly, little caterpillar, it's time...'

thanks to m for the encouragement.

"And then I see Marion laying on the ground. She looks wasted and vacant. Her friends are drawing on her stomach with a Sharpie. She's enjoying the sensation of touch the marker provides as it stimulates her brain in ways that scream "Yes! Yes! Yes!" She's enjoying an ecstasy high. She's 14."

the first time i saw this image, it was posted by melissa on a photojournalism list im on. i was deeply moved by it. moved. affected. disturbed. i dont know.

its an image that grabs you and doesnt let go. at least for me it was.

its so telling on its own. so disturbing and real.

but now its up at photocolumn. with text to go along with it. that just makes that grip a little bit tighter.

'im voting for obrien but romney is going to win' thats what i was saying to friends who asked who i was voting for on tuesday. i just knew it.

and thats what i did. and that was the outcome.

so the wealthy white man wins again.

i got into one of my news obsessive funks on tuesday night and flipped between national and local news channels all night long. until i finally made myself go to bed sometime around 1130.

someone from channel 5 was going around near the polls, interviewing folks who were going in or just coming out of the polling place. and in between the flurry of 'im voting for romney' or 'i voted for obrien because...' theres this one guy. get this. who actually says. with a smirk on his face i might add. he says 'romney. because, now dont get mad, because a man can do a better job' um. HE ACTUALLY SAID THAT.

id hate to be that guy walking into the office the next day.

hello. welcome to the modern world. you ass.

its november first. and cars are swooshing by. the familiar. swooooooosh. know what that means? theres slush on the ground. know what that means? there was snow. know what that means? its winter. so. as cowgirl jessie would say. yeeeeeeeeehaw!

the friday five:

1. were you raised in a particular religious faith? yes i was raised catholic. went to catholic school from k-8 and everything.

2. do you still practice that faith? why or why not? no. i go to church once every couple of years. as ive gotten older, ive grown closer to it. i dont like the religion itself, and the only church i go to is the one i grew up going to. its sort of a 'comfort place' for me. its difficult to explain.

3. what do you think happens after death? i believe in reincarnation.

4. what is your favorite religious ritual (participating in or just observing)? hmm. ive always thought observing prayer was intriguing. whether its a quiet prayer someone is saying to themselves. or a prayer said out loud with exuberance, like the ones i hear at dans parents house on passover. ive always enjoyed observing the intensity of it. and sometimes, its almost like spying.

5. do you believe people are basically good? most people, yes.

after a week of spinning and swirling and finally hitting bottom. quite seriously.

tomorrow. im back to work. i get to pick up the camera again.

i hope to take some kind of autumn-related photo to put on the front of my site.

i mean. who wants to look at a photo of a carnival this time of year?
